Golestan Iranian Restaurant

Bustling Persian restaurant has shisha and a host of regulars

If the Iranian Club is like a fast (and veiled) fix of the Islamic Republic, then Golestan is Tehran proper. Heaving almost every night of the week, with 20-something Persian expats jostling for dominance of the wi-fi and a house band, armed with ribabs and drums, playing mournful background sounds, this kitschy insight into what an average backstreet tea house is like is definitely worth a look in. Situated in the void that is greater Garhoud, Golestan has carved out a solid batch of regulars and expat devotees who return for hearty food and heavy smoking.

Highlights are the mast-o-khiar, a fragrant cucumber and mint yoghurt that compliments the snappy bread. Chelo sultani is also a sure hit for mains, with a generous handful of pomegranate seeds cast over an amply rounded lamb kebab. Be warned, shisha is popular with almost all the diners here so be prepared to wade through sweetened smoke on your way in and a lingering taste of roses with every forkful.
